CORE Treatment Services - Kael Klassen Scholarship Fund

CORE Treatment Services – Kael Klassen Scholarship Fund was established, in memory of Kael Klassen, to provide financial support to patients of CORE Treatment Services who struggle with substance abuse and/or mental health issues.

Kael’s Story . . .

Kael, the middle of three siblings, was uniquely different from his brothers. He was the outgoing sibling, the family ferret, always welcoming adventure.

While in high school, Kael began to use drugs and alcohol, essentially managing to keep it from his parents. After high school, Kael indicated a strong desire to attend culinary school, so his parents cautiously sent him to San Francisco for training. Within less than six months, Kael returned home exhibiting unusual behavior.  Thus began a long decade of psychiatric evaluation and drug and alcohol treatment.

Two culinary schools later, Kael eventually graduated in the field although drunk at his graduation. He had multiple jobs in the culinary field and demonstrated great talent. In his position as a sous chef, he talked of moving into a head chef position. His girlfriend shared some incredible stories about Kael’s talent as a chef including an opportunity to prepare an entire goat for a special guest at a prestigious restaurant.

Suddenly Kael went into a month-long treatment program, likely motivated by his girlfriend who said she didn’t want to spend time with him if he was drinking. His parents thought that the treatment program focused on alcohol use.   Kael returned to his chef position after the treatment.  Three days later, Kael died of an accidental heroin overdose.

Kael’s parents share:

We miss what could have been, family and grandchildren. We miss the talk of food and recipes and what he could make. We miss him at the holiday table. We miss the funny sounds he would make with his mouth, we used to call him “Clucky”. We DO NOT miss the drunken phone calls at night or the fear, dread, anxiety of the next phone call. We are so sorry for the choices he made and then the addictions that took over.

We MISS you, Kael. We LOVE you. We ask the Lord to take very good care of you.
